Dilution Guidelines

There are so many dilution guides around, so to make things simple we follow the dilution guides that doTERRA have recommended.
To decrease the likelihood of developing a skin sensitivity, especially on young or sensitive skin, it is advisable to use a carrier oil (such as Fractionated Coconut Oil) to dilute more potent essential oils, and when trying an oil for the first time.

To help us, dōTERRA have classified their oils into 3 categories – Neat (N), Sensitive (S) and Dilute (D).  Oils that are a (N) classification are safe to use neat on the skin without dilution, however I still choose to dilute them.   Oils that are a (S) classification should be applied diluted to avoid skin sensitivities.  Oils that are an (D) classification are known to cause skin sensitivities and must always be diluted with carrier oil. Please download and refer to the blending and usage safety chart, or product guide above to find out what classification each oil/blend is.

How you would dilute these classifications for an adult:
Neat (N) oils are applied 1:1 with a carrier oil.

For e.g: 1 drop of oil & 1 drop of carrier oil.
Roller bottles – 1ml of oil per 1ml of carrier oil.Sensitive (S) oils are applied 1:2 with a carrier oil.
For e.g: 1 drop of oil & 2 drops of carrier oil
Roller bottles – 1ml of oil per 2ml of carrier oil.Dilute (D) oils are applied 1:3 with a carrier oil.
For e.g: 1 drop of oil & 3 drops of carrier oil.
Roller bottles – 1ml of oil per 3ml of carrier oil.

Now, when using oils on children you need to atleast double your carrier oil.
A few examples of how you would dilute these classifications for a child:

Neat (N) oils are applied 1:2 with a carrier oil.
For e.g: 1 drop of oil & 2 drop of carrier oil.
Roller bottles – 1ml of oil per 2ml of carrier oil.Sensitive (S) oils are applied 1:4 with a carrier oil.
For e.g: 1 drop of oil & 4 drops of carrier oil
Roller bottles – 1ml of oil per 4ml of carrier oil.Dilute (D) oils are applied 1:6 with a carrier oil.
For e.g: 1 drop of oil & 6 drops of carrier oil.
Roller bottles – 1ml of oil per 6ml of carrier oil.

Now, when using oils on infants you need to atleast triple your carrier oil.
A few examples of how you would dilute these classifications for an infant:

Neat (N) oils are applied 1:3 with a carrier oil.
For e.g: 1 drop of oil & 3 drop of carrier oil.
Roller bottles – 1ml of oil per 3ml of carrier oil.Sensitive (S) oils are applied 1:6 with a carrier oil.
For e.g: 1 drop of oil & 6 drops of carrier oil
Roller bottles – 1ml of oil per 6ml of carrier oil.Dilute (D) oils are applied 1:9 with a carrier oil.
For e.g: 1 drop of oil & 9 drops of carrier oil.
Roller bottles – 1ml of oil per 9ml of carrier oil.

Please be mindful when using (S) and (D) essential oils, especially on young or sensitive skin – if in doubt the feet are a nice safe area to apply. If you are new, or feel these guidelines are too strong, feel free to use less and work from there – trust your body and trust your instincts!

dōTERRA have also created a beautiful ‘Touch’ line of pre-diluted essential oils ready to go in roller bottles. No need to mess around with dilutions – they have it covered for you! As you move forward in your essential oil journey you will no doubt become more confident in this area.
